Importing locations from a CSV

Download the template, fill it in, preview what will happen, commit. Pins are placed in the background and you get a results file at the end.

If your stockist list already lives in a spreadsheet, import it instead of typing each store in. This is the walkthrough. Which columns the file can hold, and what each header may be called, is in CSV columns and accepted headers.

Step 1 — Get the template

On Locations, open Import from CSV (next to Add location, or the button on the empty page) and press Download the template. It is a small CSV with the exact header row and two sample rows to copy the pattern from. Delete the samples before you import.

Step 2 — Fill it in

Only name is required for the file to be accepted. Each row then needs enough to put a pin on the map — one of:

  • lat and lng, or
  • address_line1, city and country, or
  • postcode and country.

Rows without one of those combinations are reported as invalid and skipped; nothing else in the file is affected.

Two things that catch people out:

  • Tags are separated with | in the CSV — flagship|authorized-dealer — because commas split columns.
  • Country is matched as you wrote it, so keep it consistent across rows ("Australia" on every row, or "AU" on every row).

Headers are matched case-insensitively and common variants are understood (zip → postcode, state → region, store → name). Save as a comma-separated CSV, under 1 MB and 2,000 rows.

If your list is in a different layout altogether, hand it to Shopify Sidekick first: it maps your columns to Nearmio's, lists what each row is missing, and can write the rows out in the template layout. See Asking Shopify Sidekick about your locations.

Step 3 — Preview

Drop the file on Drop your CSV here, or choose a file and press Preview import. Nothing has been imported yet. The preview counts every row as one of:

  • New — will be created.
  • Update — matches a location you already have, and will update it in place. See Re-importing to update locations.
  • Duplicate in file — the same store appears earlier in this file; the later row is skipped.
  • Over plan limit — on the Free plan, rows past your 5th location. They are skipped and listed, never silently dropped. See Plans and pricing.
  • Invalid — with the reason in the Note column.

Fix anything surprising in the spreadsheet and press Upload a different file; otherwise carry on.

Step 4 — Commit

Press Commit import (N). Rows that already have coordinates are stored as-is; the rest are looked up from their address, a couple of rows a second, with a Geocoding X of Y progress line. You can leave the page — the import carries on in the background.

Step 5 — Read the results

When it finishes you get counts of created, updated, need fixing and skipped, plus Download results.csv — one line per row with its status and reason, handy to keep next to the spreadsheet.

Need fixing is the number of addresses Nearmio could not place. Press Fix N pins to open just those. How to fix them is in Fixing a pin that landed wrong.

Check it worked

Back on Locations, the On the map tile should have gone up by the number of rows created. If Needs attention went up too, that is the fix queue waiting for you — a few minutes with the map, not a problem with the import.
