Probably not. If everything you send is under 5 kg, the box you use does not change what a customer is charged — the price comes from the weight and where it is going. You can leave packaging alone entirely.
Packaging starts to matter above 5 kg. Past that weight, a large light parcel can be charged on its size rather than its actual weight, so the box you declare can cost more than what is inside it. That is when telling TellShip about your real boxes is worth the few minutes.
So when should I set boxes up?
Set up your boxes if either of these is true:
- You send parcels over 5 kg. The size of the box affects the price, so a box that is bigger than it needs to be quietly costs you money.
- You send bulky but light things — cushions, lampshades, anything that fills a box without weighing much. These are the parcels where size pricing bites first.
If neither is true, your products' weights are doing all the work, and adding boxes will not change a single quote.
What happens if I do nothing?
Every store starts with one standard parcel, deliberately small, so it can never be the thing that raises a price. If an order is too heavy for it, TellShip quotes on the actual weight instead of refusing — you will always get a price.
What TellShip needs from you either way
Weights on your products. A product with no weight is quoted as if it weighed nothing, which is how a $2 quote for a 4 kg parcel happens. Product sizes are optional; weights are not.
